Latest testing shows less harmful chemicals in Battle Creek water

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) — Although a drinking water standard violation remains in effect for some Battle Creek-area customers, the city says previously high levels of a potentially hazardous chemical group are lowering.

In March, testing of the water in the Battle Creek municipal system exceeded the federal safety standard of 80 parts per billion for trihalomethanes, or TTHM.

While the rise in TTHM was not an immediate health emergency and did not require customers to boil their water, prolonged exposure to high amounts of the chemical over many years could affect the liver, kidneys or central nervous system and increase cancer risk, according to the city…
