Kids wrote essays about why they wanted a new bike then got one for free

Kids wrote essays to win a free bike Saturday.

From 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Seelye Kia in Battle Creek, in partnership with Bobby Holley and the Church of Living Water, 100 bikes were given away to 50 boys and 50 girls for writing a short essay about why they would like a new bike and what they look forward to the most about having it.

Kids ages 7-10 who wanted to participate were able to register at the event, and if all the bikes were given away before all registered kids were able to get one, they were directed to “smaller events” where they can get another chance at a bike, event organizers said.

“For a child, a bike is more than two wheels and pedals,” event organizers said. “In their imagination, it can become a motorcycle, a race car or a rocket ship. It gives them freedom and a sense of accomplishment and responsibility.”…
