DEA warns of deadly rise in carfentanil as major seizure tied to cartel hits West Michigan

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — A growing threat is making its way through Michigan; a drug so potent that just a speck can be lethal.

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is raising alarms over carfentanil, a synthetic opioid 100 times more powerful than fentanyl, following a record seizure in the state and increased evidence of cartel involvement.

Last year, federal agents intercepted 12.4 kilograms of carfentanil on a truck traveling through Kalamazoo to Detroit. DEA officials say the shipment was traced to the Sinaloa cartel, with origins in Mexico and distribution routed through California…
