The science behind Fourth of July fireworks

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WLNS) — It’s the Fourth of July in Mid-Michigan and that means there’s no shortage of things lighting up the night sky. From carnivals, to hot air balloon festivals filled with ‘Balloon Illums’, there’s a lot to see, although the stars of the show still are the fireworks.

Modern day firework displays are spectacular, and the technology has come a long way since it was first discovered over two thousand years ago.

Fireworks got their start back around 200 BC in China where it was discovered that throwing bamboo on a fire made it sizzle, crack, and even explode. A few hundred years later, people packed gunpowder into the bamboo, giving it even more explosive power. It’s also documented that iron shavings were occasionally added to these early fireworks to make them sparkle…
