Phone ‘spoofing’ scam targeting Portage residents, city warns

PORTAGE, Mich. — The City of Portage is warning residents of a new phone “spoofing” scam in which these scammers are using a city phone number to contact them.

The city said the scammers claim to be from Walmart and are trying to trick residents into providing them with financial information, such as a credit card number.

Spoofing is when someone disguises an email address, display name, phone number, text message, or website URL to convince a person that they are interacting with a known, trusted source, according to officials.
