Kalamazoo County commissioner charged with domestic violence

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — A Kalamazoo County commissioner has been charged with domestic assault after police say she slapped a man while an officer was watching.

Tami Rayshawn Rey was arraigned Thursday on two counts of misdemeanor domestic violence and two felony counts of resisting or obstructing a police officer.

Domestic violence prevention advocate: ‘Reach out’

The charges stem from a May 23 incident in Kalamazoo. Police reports from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety says Rey called officers regarding a disagreement over picking up her child from the child’s father. After some arguing, the father ultimately handed the child over to Rey. When getting the diaper bag for her, dropped it on the ground rather than handing it to her, police said.

“Rey became upset and immediately slapped (the man) once in the face with her right hand in my presence,” an officer wrote. “During this physical assault, Rey had her child on her left hip.”…
