Invasive crayfish found inside Michigan fish hatchery pond

MATTAWAN, MI — The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is attempting to figure out how an invasive crayfish entered a pond at one of its fish hatcheries.

On Thursday, July 24, the DNR said it found one live and two dead red swamp crayfish in a pond used for rearing muskellunge at the Wolf Lake State Fish Hatchery in Kalamazoo County.

The crayfish are native to Luisiana and are prohibited in Michigan, although infestations have been discovered before. They outcompete native species and burrow into shorelines, where they pose an erosive threat to infrastructure…
