KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — On Aug. 2, a class of photography enthusiasts and newcomers will attend a “macro” photography workshop at Norman Camera and then visit the Kalamazoo Nature Center for a photo walk.
“Macro photography is essentially taking pictures of small things,” Sean Newton, marketing manager for Norman Camera, said. “Taking pictures of flowers, bugs or details on a leaf.”

The workshop will be led by Erica Robinson — a technical representative from Japanese camera lens manufacturer, TAMRON — before attendees leave for the Kalamazoo Nature Center around 11:30 a.m. to put their newfound skills to the test.
“Don’t be intimidated,” Newton said. “I think a lot of people get really caught up in that they’re not going to do it right.”
Hastings nature center hosts ‘social hiking’ event
Entry into the event is $30 and requires each participant to bring their own camera and equipment. While a smartphone lens can take a decent picture in a pinch, Newton recognizes the difference between an iPhone and using a traditional camera.
“Cellphones can do great things now, but there’s definitely something more to having a camera and a lens proper,” Newton said. “The higher quality images come from a bigger sensor.”…
