Kalamazoo County launches aerial survey to map underground aquifers

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Starting Monday, Kalamazoo County will begin an airborne electromagnetic (AEM) survey to map underground aquifers in areas of Oshtemo, Comstock, Ross, and Texas townships.

The survey involves a helicopter towing a hexagonal frame above ground. That frame contains technology capable of transmitting and receiving electromagnetic signals to detect geological features below the surface, such as aquifers that supply local drinking water.
