Kalamazoo hosts 14th annual Scrabble Fest to boost adult literacy through fun competition

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Wordsmiths went head-to-head at the 14th annual Scrabble Fest in Kalamazoo on Saturday.

Held by the Kalamazoo Literacy Council, the event doubles as a tournament and a fundraiser to help connect adults with literacy resources.

“Literacy is important for everyone, and we want to make sure that everyone has services to help them to be empowered to reach their full potential as parents, employees and community members,” said Michael Evans, executive director and chief literacy advocate for the Kalamazoo Literacy Council.

Roughly 13% of adults 25 and older read at a fourth-grade level, according to the Kalamazoo Literacy Council.
