Local officials unite with Habitat for Humanity to boost affordable housing efforts

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — The Battle Creek Area Habitat for Humanity is making strides in its mission to build more affordable housing, thanks to a collaborative effort with state and city officials.

Rep. Steve Frisbie (R- Pennfield Township), staff, and City Councilwoman Paige Katarsky-Smith joined Habitat’s volunteers to begin work on a new home in Battle Creek on the foundation and exterior walls of a new home.

The build of several new homes was made possible through MI-HOPE, a $10 Million grant for energy-efficiency focused house repairs and upgrades launched by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in 2022.

“It’s good to have this camaraderie and do something together,” Frisbie said. “We don’t often get to work together at the city and state level and county levels. So anytime we can do this, I’m happy to do it. And, nothing going on in Lansing today, no sessions for either one. So we’re here, I brought my staff and we’re gonna get it done, we’re gonna have the walls up before the end of the day.”…
