Kalamazoo Public Schools rolls out weapon detector systems for first day

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Many Kalamazoo Public Schools students were welcomed back to class Monday by teachers and a weapon detector system.

While the detectors have been used at athletic and special events before, this semester marks the first time visitors and students will be required to go through the system at middle and high schools.

One of the schools where the rollout took place was Loy Norrix High School. Kaneisha Walker was waiting for her son and daughter, who are both new to the school as freshmen. She supports the expanded use of the OPENGATE Weapons Detection System.

“For me, being a freshman parent, I feel a little more at ease. I feel like my kids will be safer because there is a lot going on in this generation right now. So I think it’s fine,” she told News 8.
