Kalamazoo Township, former fire chief settle lawsuit

KALAMAZOO TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A lawsuit against Kalamazoo Township over the firing of its former fire chief has been settled, according to a joint release shared by the plaintiff’s attorney.

David Obreiter, who served as the township’s fire chief before being terminated in 2022, filed the lawsuit in 2023 against the township and former Township Manager Dexter Mitchell. Obreiter claimed he was deprived of due process and was not given a chance to defend himself against workplace harassment allegations.

The parties announced Thursday that they had reached a settlement.

“Pursuant to the terms of the settlement, the parties have agreed to dismiss the case in its entirety including a pending appeal before the United States Court of Appeal for the Sixth Circuit,” the release said. “While the specific terms of the settlement remain confidential, all parties have expressed satisfaction with the outcome. This resolution allows the parties to move forward without the necessity of continued litigation.”…
