Kalamazoo County pushes forward with homeless shelter despite setback in financial support

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Kalamazoo County officials remain determined to open what would become the largest family homeless shelter in Michigan, despite losing an anticipated $500,000 pledge of support from the city of Portage, they said.

The selected site for The Landing Place shelter, a former Country Inn & Suites hotel on East Kilgore is what county commissioners believe to be the right fit for families facing housing instability, but it’s a location that Portage officials decided was not in the city’s best interest to support, according to City Manager Patrick McGinnis.

McGinnis told News Channel 3 the city of Portage did not revoke support of the project, but rather, that their initial commitment to contribute $500,000 for the shelter project was under different circumstances, including a different location and a different timeline…
