Kalamazoo celebrates water plant anniversary amid investments, projects

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — The City of Kalamazoo celebrated 70 years of operations at its Water Reclamation Plant on Thursday.

The anniversary comes as several infrastructure projects take shape for the water utility. One of the recent projects is a new system in the Tertiary disk filter facility. The 10 new filters are part of a $26 million investment that was completed in May. The previous system was 40 years old.

Kalamazoo begins $60M water system upgrade

“Think of those like big Brita filters that are on our final affluent just to make sure the water is polished and pure before it goes back to the Kalamazoo River,” James Baker, the Director of Public Services for the City of Kalamazoo, told News 8.

Since the 1950s, the plant has been treating wastewater on its way back to the river. Baker said the plant and the investments that have followed are part of a collaborative effort between the city and its residents. It’s one project within the larger water utility service that thousands rely on around the Kalamazoo area…
