Portage DPS: Candle in bedroom sparked house fire

PORTAGE, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities say they believe “the improper use of a candle” in a bedroom sparked a house fire in Portage early Tuesday morning. The fire sent one person to the hospital and caused nearly $200,000 in damage.

The call came in around 2:30 a.m. from the 6,600 block of Cypress Street near Tattersall Road. The person who called reported a mattress on fire in a bedroom, according to a release from the Portage Department of Public Safety’s Fire Division.

When crews arrived, they found heavy fire and smoke pouring from multiple bedroom windows. All three of the home’s occupants — and their dog — managed to get out safely before firefighters showed up…
