PHOTOS: Portage breaks ground on permanent home for farmer’s market

PORTAGE, Mich. — Ground has broken on what is anticipated to become the permanent home for the Portage Farmer’s Market.

Once open, the venue on East Centre Avenue is expected to feature three open-air pavilions with 50 covered vendor stalls, ADA-compliant walkways, a performance space, picnic areas and a space for food trucks, according to the City of Portage.

“The whole concept of the market was to support local, to provide healthy eating options, and to really build a sense of community and a place where people can come enjoy entertainment, sit down, talk with their neighbor, and so it’s really serving multiple ideas,” Mayor Patricia Randall said.

The $3.25 million pavilion project was funded by a $1.75 million State of Michigan grant, a pledged $1 million philanthropic gift and the City of Portage, according to city officials…
