Nearly 700lbs of food donated to Loaves & Fishes as SNAP benefits face uncertainty

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — With just days left before federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits could be paused due to the ongoing government shutdown, one local food pantry is seeing both growing need, and growing generosity.

Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes received nearly 700 lbs. of donated dry goods from Nancy Labus, the co-owner of The Craftsman Chop House and East Egg restaurants, which recently closed after nearly 20 years in business.

The donation comes at a critical time for the nonprofit, which serves about 850 people a day or more than 3,000 unduplicated households a month, according to associate director Greta Faworski.

“We’ve seen a little bit of a spike since the announcement of the SNAP benefits being delayed for November,” Faworski said. “There’s a little bit of panic, and a lot of uncertainty.”…
