ROSS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Throughout November, the W.K. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary near Kalamazoo will host a variety of community events, including a storybook walk for families and a sold-out painting class.
“This year, we’re going to be learning about hand-painting northern cardinals,” Brenden Kokx, avian caretaker at the W.K. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary, said.

On Nov. 15, registered participants will learn more about northern cardinals through an educational slideshow before beginning a painting class in which each individual is given a hand-carved wooden sculpture to decorate.
During regular open hours, guests to the W.K. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary can also explore a storybook walking trail, which features excerpts from Roma Gans’ illustrated book “How Do Birds Find Their Way.”
The storybook walking trail travels beside Wintergreen Lake and the sanctuary’s overlook, a community building and museum featuring family activities.
