New Secure Flag Retirement Box Installed at Battle Creek Police Department Thanks to Local Girl Scout Effort

A new secure flag retirement box has been installed in the lobby of the Battle Creek Police Department. The project was led by Josie Pawlowicz, a senior at Lakeview High School and the Battle Creek Area Math and Science Center. Pawlowicz, a Girl Scout, organized the effort to provide a convenient way for the community to retire worn American flags.

The box was unveiled on November 10, 2025, during a ceremony attended by local officials, including Mayor Mark Behnke and Commissioner Chris Simmons. Members of Pawlowicz’s family and representatives from the Cereal City Sunrise Rotary Club were also present. The collection box is located downtown and offers a secure option for flag disposal. It adds to existing locations at American Legion Post 298 in Springfield and Post 257 in Battle Creek.

The police department was selected for its central location and because several staff members are veterans. Pawlowicz was motivated by her experience with the Mackinac Island Scout Service Program and her brother’s service at the U.S. Naval Academy. She worked with the Cereal City Sunrise Rotary to raise funds and collaborated with Michael Waidelich of Black Wolf Flag Co. to design and build the box.
