Porter Street NEZ part of Transformational Brownfield Project to expand housing in Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The city of Kalamazoo has several projects that will soon be underway to develop more housing for the area.

An abandoned warehouse at 619 Porter Street will be turned into a newly constructed five-story mixed use building with 58 residential unis and 5,000 square feet of commercial space. The property is a Neighborhood Enterprise Zone, or NEZ, and owned by PlazaCorp.

The city says the Speareflex building at 261 East Kalamazoo Avenue will become 57 rental homes in a few years and the Kalamazoo city commission approved a restated resolution Monday to have a Commercial Rehabilitation Exemption at the property…
