Rabies confirmed in Barry County bat

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A bat found in Barry County has tested positive for rabies.

It’s the county’s first rabies-positive bat of the season, according to the Barry-Eaton District Health Department. Officials said the bat was found in northern Barry County, but they did not provide any more details.

Rabies is deadly, but preventable. It typically starts with a fever and headache, general weakness and an itching sensation at the exposure site. Over time, brain dysfunction will appear, including difficulty sleeping, anxiety and confusion, hallucinations, aggression, partial paralysis, difficulty swallowing and a fear of water.
