Warming Shelters Open Across Kalamazoo and Portage to Help Residents Stay Safe During Cold Snap

Temperatures in Kalamazoo are expected to drop to single digits this weekend. Windchills may reach near zero. Local authorities are preparing to help residents stay safe in the cold. The City of Kalamazoo and the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) will open several warming shelters and centers. These locations will offer overnight and daytime shelter.

Ministry with Community at 500 N Edwards St will be an overnight shelter for adults only. It will operate from December 1, 2025, through March 2026. Registration is required through Housing Resource Inc. Kalamazoo Gospel Ministries at 448 N Burdick St is open now. It accepts adults and children with parents. Valid identification showing Kalamazoo area residency is needed.

For daytime shelter, Westminster Presbyterian Church in Portage will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. until March 31, 2026, except on Thanksgiving and Christmas.
