KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Lake effect snow and bitter cold temperatures were expected to create a period of slick travel for parts of the region beginning Saturday afternoon through the early part of Sunday.
A Winter Weather Advisory went into effect at 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon and was scheduled through 11 a.m. Sunday for several counties in West Michigan. This included Kalamazoo, Van Buren, Allegan, Ottawa, Muskegon and Oceana counties.
Temperatures are forecast to drop into the single digits overnight, which will make road salt products less effective both Sunday and Monday morning.

The fine, powdery nature of the snow also makes it susceptible to blowing and drifting, especially on north-south oriented roads.
