KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI — Comstock Township trustees voted unanimously on Monday, Dec. 15, to approve an ordinance governing the development of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in the township.
It puts an end to a township moratorium on “large” wind, solar, battery and hybrid energy projects in the township. That was enacted in January and originally set to expire Dec. 31.
The board has been embroiled in debate over potential BESS facilities since the beginning of 2025. Throughout the year, trustees disagreed on whether to end the moratorium. It’s been a major point of contention — and one of the reasons all seven board members could face recall campaigns…
