In order to boost Christmas sales of its novel dual-horn phonograph in 1908, the Duplex Phonograph Company constructed a miniature roller coaster – a replica of the one that opened the year before at Oakwood Park on the banks of Woods Lake. The roller coaster was made of metal and powered by electricity, which was a pretty exciting feature at the time. It ran throughout the holiday season in the “Big Corner Store,” a huge retail space on the ground floor of the Peninsula Building.
