Man admits to deadly Kalamazoo drive-by shooting

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — A Kalamazoo man pleaded guilty in the case of a drive-by shooting that left a man dead on Mother’s Day of 2023.

Andrew Johnson, 20, pleaded guilty Tuesday to second-degree murder and felony firearm charges just before a jury trial was set to begin, according to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety. His sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 2.

The drive-by shooting happened in broad daylight on May 14, 2023 on Ada Street near N Westnedge Avenue, according to KDPS. Marcus Pierce, 33, was killed. Two others were injured: a 58-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man.

Johnson’s co-defendant Demario Deonte Jackson previously pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the shooting, for which he is serving a sentence of between 18 to 50 years. Another co-defendant, Dontaviour Lawrel Smith, 23, is scheduled for a preliminary examination at the end of the month after being extradited from Georgia last year on a nine-count felony warrant, KDPS said…
