Comstock Township adds new fire engine to replaced totaled one

COMSTOCK TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Comstock Township Fire Department welcomed a new fire engine Tuesday to replace one that was smashed during a 2024 crash on I-94.

In what’s known as a “push-in ceremony,” a large group of first responders pushed the front end of Engine 912 backwards into Station 9-1. The new red fire engine reads “Comstock Fire Rescue: ‘Taking care of those who depend on us,’” and includes a decal honoring firefighters who served on 9-11.

Engine 912 replaces the fire truck that was totaled in a crash on eastbound I-94 east of Sprinkle Road when a 24-foot box truck lost control on Dec. 12, 2024.

No first responders were hurt in the crash but some were captured on dashcam video running away from the truck moments afterward. Two other Comstock fire vehicles and a Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office cruiser were hit as well.

The arrival of the new Engine 912 “represents resilience, progress and our continued commitment to serving the community safely and effectively,” wrote Comstock Fire & Rescue in a social media post
