Amazing America: The booms and busts that shaped historic Marshall

MARSHALL, Mich. — The City of Marshall was founded in 1830 by two brothers from upstate New York who dreamt of building a big, bustling city halfway between Detroit and Chicago.

Fast forward to today, Marshall is now one of the nation’s largest National Historic Landmark Districts and home to over 800 historically significant homes and buildings– and each one has a story.

“When you can see history around you, that’s when it really comes alive,” Pattie Parker, lifelong Marshall resident and Museum Manager, said. “We had several different booms and busts throughout the 1800s, and it really defined both our history, but also the architecture that you still see here in town today.”…
