Portage, Michigan — A blast of the coldest air seen so far this winter is expected to settle across Southwest Michigan early this week, bringing dangerous wind chills well below zero and prompting local officials to open a warming center for residents in need.

According to the National Weather Service, confidence continues to grow that a powerful Arctic air mass will move into Michigan beginning Monday and linger through Tuesday. Forecasters warn that wind chills between -15 and -25 degrees are increasingly likely, particularly overnight and during the early morning hours.
