Kalamazoo County highway shuts down following multiple collisions in whiteout conditions

KALAMAZOO, MI — “Multiple collisions” in whiteout conditions led officials to close northbound U.S. 131 near M-43 (West Main) as well as the northbound U.S. 131 business loop on the morning of Monday, Jan. 19, according to a Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office report.

“Seek alternate routes if you must travel,” read a post on the sheriff’s office Facebook page, published at about 11 a.m. “Slow down, expect rapidly changing visibility and conditions, and pack a ditch kit w/ chains, shovel, warm clothes, hats/gloves/boots, charged cell phone, etc. Assistance may be delayed due to multiple slide-offs and current conditions.”…
