Plainwell schools to rename gym in memory of educator, farmer who died in silo accident

PLAINWELL, Mich. — The gymnasium at Plainwell Middle School will be officially renamed after an educator who died while working in a grain silo in 2023, Plainwell Community Schools announced Wednesday.

Ryan Meert, who was also a farmer, was working in the silo on June 29 of that year when he became trapped within the tank, eventually sinking underneath the grain and dying, according to the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office.

In honor of his memory, the district said they are hosting a ceremony Tuesday, Feb. 3 where the middle school’s gymnasium will be officially renamed as “The Ryan Meert Memorial Gymnasium.”…
