New assistance for Calhoun County residents buying homes

Calhoun County residents seeking to buy a home may be eligible for up to $8,000 in financial assistance through a new program launched by the county treasurer’s office and Independent Bank.

The Calhoun County Homebuyer Assistance Program offers up to $6,000 in down payment assistance from the treasurer’s office and up to $2,000 from Independent Bank to help cover closing costs, according to a community announcement.

Who is eligible?

To qualify, applicants must purchase a primary residence in Calhoun County, have a household income at or below 120% of the county’s area median income, attend pre-purchase homebuyer counseling, secure financing through Independent Bank and contribute at least $1,000 toward the purchase of the home.

“Homeownership is a key part of building stable families and strong communities,” Treasurer Melinda Weaver said in the announcement. “This partnership allows us to provide meaningful assistance to buyers who are ready to take that step but need help overcoming upfront costs.”
