This represents a 24.4% decrease compared to the 2014-19 pre-pandemic average of 3,093 crashes per year.
The City of Kalamazoo partially credits the Safe Streets for All Safety Action Plan for these reductions, which implemented measures such as:
- “Road diets,” which changed four-lane streets to three lanes
- Lane elimination and narrowing
- Roundabouts
- Traffic circles
- Bike lanes
- Enhanced pedestrian crossing lighting and signage
- Dynamic signal timing
- Audible pedestrian crossing signals
- Adding stop signs to uncontrolled intersections
- Speed humps
The plan is a continuation of work that began in 2024, which also unlocks federal funding infrastructure improvements, according to a release.
