Portage firefighter and his toddler seriously injured in crash with stolen Kia

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — After their vehicle was hit by a minor driving a stolen Kia Soul earlier this week in Kalamazoo, a Portage firefighter and his toddler remain in the hospital with serious injuries.

The Portage Department of Public Safety (PDPS) told News Channel 3 on Thursday that firefighter Jacob Mahoney and his 4-year-old son, Luca, were both seriously injured after their red Ford Escape was t-boned by a young driver at the intersection of Douglas Avenue and West North Street that day. Mahoney was off-duty at the time.

The young driver reportedly stole the Kia from its owner, Alexandra Fall, sometime early Tuesday morning or late Monday night in the parking lot of Mount Royal Townhomes on Concord Place Drive in Kalamazoo. That driver was also seriously injured, but the passenger — who police said was a girl under the age of 18 — was only minorly injured.

Mahoney is now suffering from multiple broken bones and will need surgery, according to public safety. The father and son are expected to make a full recovery, and PDPS Chief Matthew Wolfe has created a GoFundMe to help raise money for the family’s “incidental expenses.”…
