Charges authorized against teen involved in crash that injured Portage firefighter, son

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Charges have been authorized against a 17-year-old that police say stole a Kia Soul and injured a Portage firefighter and his son in a February crash.

According to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS), the unnamed teenager is facing the following charges:

  • Two counts of reckless driving causing serious impairment of a bodily function (felony)
  • Two counts of operating while license suspended, revoked, denied causing serious injury (felony)
  • One count of Stolen property: receive and conceal motor vehicle (felony)
  • Two counts of moving violation causing serious impairment of a bodily function (misdemeanor)

All seven charges stem from a crash involving the teenager, Portage firefighter Jacob Mahoney, 30, and his four-year-old son, Luca.

Mahoney was off duty and was running errands with his son when the crash happened at the intersection of Douglas Avenue and West North Street in Kalamazoo.
