Finding hope amid tornadoes’ destruction

My name is Natalie Davies, and I wear a variety of hats at the Freep, including writing breaking news, reporting on Saturdays and helping with letters to the editor. Today, I’m here to talk tornadoes. I spent last weekend in Union City, where an EF3 tornado hit and left three dead and numerous houses damaged and destroyed. Like most of the residents I spoke with, it was my first time seeing the aftermath of a deadly storm up close.

Driving into Union City on Saturday morning, it was pouring rain. The day after trees fell on many houses leaving holes in roofs and ceilings, water sept through the cracks and began flooding inside. By the time the rain stopped later in the morning, neighbors and crews were already walking around town and jumping in with chain saws and sets of helping hands to move trees and clean debris.

A few miles away from the main part of town, Tuttle Road along Union Lake was closed on Saturday as search and rescue teams searched through houses that were no longer intact and cleared the road…
