Kalamazoo approves next step in plan to convert downtown street to two-way traffic

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — A long-planned project to convert Kalamazoo Avenue in downtown Kalamazoo from a one-way street to a two-way street is moving forward, with construction potentially beginning later this year.

City officials say the project, which has been discussed for years, recently reached the bid stage after clearing federal requirements, environmental reviews and coordination with utility companies and railroads.

Bids for the project are expected to open in early May. If a contractor is selected and paperwork is completed, work could begin around early July.

“We’ve finally been able to get it to the bid stage,” Dennis Randolph, City of Kalamazoo traffic engineer, said. “We should be bid early in May. At that time we’ll find out who our potential contractor is, and they would move in and potentially start work probably right around the beginning of July.”…
