Officials investigate Helmer Creek discoloration

The city of Springfield and the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a reported discoloration in Helmer Creek.

The incident first came to attention following a social media post on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, the sheriff’s office said in an announcement. The discoloration has significantly dissipated; however, officials are continuing to investigate the source and cause.

CCSO Emergency Management is currently on scene, and the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy has been notified. As part of the investigation, the sheriff’s office is utilizing drone technology to trace the path of the discoloration and identify any potential origin points…
