‘Very worrisome’: Springfield residents avoiding Helmer Creek after possible contamination

SPRINGFIELD, Mich. — The City of Springfield is urging residents to stay away from Helmer Creek due to possible contamination.

Springfield — located in Calhoun County — and the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) are now investigating, the city said on Facebook.

Cathrine Tossava took these pictures from her backyard Tuesday, water with such an intense neon green color it brightened the nearby grass.

“My son was playing outside with his grandpa and came inside and told me that the water is really green,” she said. “And my first thought was, ‘yep, algae’s growing.’ They went back out there and said, ‘no, it’s really green.'”
