Kansas City airport handles massive World Cup travel surge with short security waits, soccer sends airport traffic near historic high

Kansas City, Missouri – Kansas City International Airport came within a narrow margin of making history on June 17, as a wave of departing travelers turned an ordinary Wednesday into one of the busiest days MCI has ever seen.

Airport officials said nearly 23,500 people passed through the security screening area, making it the second busiest outbound travel day in MCI history. The total fell just 185 passengers short of the airport’s all-time busiest day, recorded on May 18, 2025.

The surge came as Kansas City continued to feel the impact of major international soccer traffic. Domestic flights were packed with World Cup fans leaving the city after the Kansas City match and moving on to their next destination.
