PHOTOS: Summer storm dumps hail on Downtown Wheeler Airport taxiways

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Mother Nature threw an icy curveball at local crews Wednesday morning, burying airport runways under a blanket of winter weather in the heat of August.

A severe summer storm dumped up to 3 inches of hail on several taxiways at Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport on August 19, forcing snow removal crews to mobilize during what is typically one of the hottest months of the year.

The storm also destroyed a nearby utility pole, knocking out power to portions of the airport. Utility provider Evergy is actively working to restore electricity…
