LOUISBERG, Kan. (KCTV) – Stargazers were able to catch a partial lunar eclipse Thursday night, with the Astronomical Society of Kansas City holding an event for the occasion.
They invited the community to join them, and handed out the perfect snack: a Moon Pie.
“Oh, we have such a fun night planned,” said the society’s vice president, Mitch Cloud. “The main thing, and hardest thing to predict is the weather. The last lunar eclipse we had was complete cloud cover, but tonight we have beautifully clear skies. So, we’re really excited to see the eclipse.”
Despite it not being a total lunar eclipse, it was pretty close. At maximum eclipse around 11:12 p.m. over 96% of the moon slipped into umbra, or the Earth’s darkest shadow. Amateur astronomers set up their telescopes on the lawn next to the Powell Observatory.
