Blue Valley School District is preparing for another round of budget cuts heading into the 2027-28 school year, with plans that include suspending seventh- and eighth-grade wrestling, cross country and drill/dance teams, trimming administrative positions and scaling back performing-arts support. The Johnson County district says the reductions are necessary even after it already eliminated certain leadership roles and support positions and withheld administrator raises for the current school year.
According to KSHB 41 Kansas City, the district shared an update on the planned reductions, saying additional cuts are needed despite steps already taken. The same report notes Blue Valley made more than $6 million in prior budget reductions and that administrators did not receive a salary increase for the 2026-27 school year. Most of the newly announced changes are set to take effect in 2027-28, though some will begin during the current academic year, per a district press release cited in the report.
What’s On the Chopping Block
The list of planned reductions is extensive. Blue Valley intends to reduce administrative positions, cut high school coaching jobs and performing-arts support, and limit out-of-area travel, according to fox4kc.com. The district also plans to suspend all seventh- and eighth-grade wrestling, cross country and drill/dance team programs, the outlet reports.
Other changes target programs families may not expect to see on a budget memo. The district plans to reduce support for Parents as Teachers and make adjustments to world-language programming that affect Chinese Immersion, per the same fox4kc.com report. Blue Valley has said it will communicate directly with families when changes affect a student’s school, program or experience, acknowledging that the cuts will touch valued programs and opportunities.
Why the District Says Cuts Keep Coming
The district has cited low enrollment, rising operating costs and the state’s underfunding of special education as the drivers behind the reductions, fox4kc.com reports. Reporting on the scale of the financial gap has varied: kansascity.com has reported Blue Valley faces a $10 million funding gap for next school year, while kshb.com separately reported an $18 million shortfall tied to missing special-education funding from the state. Fox4kc.com also reported that Blue Valley transferred $18.9 million from other district resources to cover the special-education funding gap, while kctv5.com reported a transfer of $18 million from the district’s general fund for the same purpose…
