Man armed with ‘sharp object’ arrested in downtown Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City police arrested a man they say threatened an officer with a sharp object and barricaded himself inside a downtown grocery store.

Around 9 a.m. Wednesday, an off-duty officer was working at the downtown Cosentino’s Market at 13th and Main when he saw a man allegedly attempting to shoplift, Kansas City police said.

The officer contacted the man when police said he threatened the officer with a sharp object.

KCPD said the officer immediately backed away and called for backup. Meanwhile, the man barricaded himself inside the grocery store’s entrance vestibule. Police said he refused to exit and was making threatening statements to people nearby.

When additional officers arrived, other shoppers were safely evacuated, and police initiated a standoff.

Police said negotiators talked to the man and made several attempts to get him to peacefully surrender.
