Kansas City, KS: Rosedale Bar-B-Q, a historic barbecue joint on Southwest Boulevard

Rosedale Bar-B-Q was founded in 1934. Landing in its 90th year, it’s located at 600 Southwest Boulevard in Kansas City, Kansas. Starting as a stand with hot dogs and beer on July 4, 1934, called The Bucket Stand, time and the aroma of someone else’s smoked meats would eventually carry the owners into barbecue.

In 1935, Anthony Rieke, his wife, Alda, and Alda’s brother, Anthony “Tony” Sieleman, put their money together and started a barbeque stand not too far from the hot dog stand. They probably didn’t know it way back then, but it turned out to be the best decision they made. The risk and the reward.

I tried Rosedale barbecue while I was in town, and I’m glad I did. Kansas City is the world’ barbecue capital, so it’s tough to stand out. I got a huge quantity of food, enough for two meals, and everything was quite delicious. As a bonus, the service was friendly. I will definitely be back when I’m in town! Anthony Aloysius Rieke passed away on March 5, 1997, at age 92. Alda E. Sieleman Rieke passed away in 2002 at age 93-94. The Riekes’ daughter, Janelle, and her husband, Phil Brown, became the owners. Their daughter, Marisha along with her husband, Bill, manage the barbecue.
