These KC-area nursing homes rank among worst, federal data shows – some were cited for abuse

For seniors and their loved ones, choosing a nursing home in the Kansas City area can be a big — and pricey — decision.

Of Missouri’s over a thousand nursing homes , assisted living facilities and long-term care facilities, approximately one in seven received a one star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The ranking uses data from nursing homes’ last three state health inspections, alongside three years of complaints.

In Missouri and Kansas, inspectors look at residents’ well-being, the building, the staff and food safety. Law requires each facility to be inspected by state officials at least every 15 months.

Some of these facilities were recently cited for abuse . The federal website does not give details on what they were cited for, but defined abuse as “the willful infliction of injury, unreasonable confinement, intimidation, or punishment with resulting physical harm, pain or mental anguish. It includes verbal abuse, sexual abuse, physical abuse, and mental abuse.”
