Legendary BBQ Joint: Arthur Bryant’s in Kansas City

We can talk about who has the best barbecue in Kansas City for a couple of hours or so. Then, we might want to go to our favorite spot to fulfill that tastebud urge.

The truth is, many places in Kansas City serve up some good barbecue for each of our particular palates. One of those places might be Arthur Bryant’s. This is one of my preferred places, but I like several.

You can’t talk about Arthur Bryant’s, however, without mentioning Henry Perry. He’s the man who is given so much credit for developing barbecue in Kansas City. In 2020, Henry Perry Day was officially proclaimed by Mayor Quinton Lucas to be celebrated on July 3. In 2014, Perry was finally inducted into the Barbecue Hall of Fame.

When Perry died in 1940, he left his restaurant to one of his employees named Charlie Bryant who ran it with help from his brother, Arthur. In 1946, Arthur took over and relocated the restaurant to its current location at 1727 Brooklyn. (Perry’s restaurant was at 1900 Highland Avenue.)
