Independence Center has clarified how redevelopment could look around the for-sale indoor mall after city officials namedropped the Kansas City Royals in pitching the site for a new ballpark.
Media reports on Independence’s outreach to the team, as discussed during a recent City Council meeting, should not alarm existing mall occupants, Holly Solomon, the center’s director of marketing and leasing, wrote in a Friday letter to tenants.

Despite the city’s talk, Solomon’s letter does not reference the Royals — who are pursuing a new stadium in downtown Kansas City — as part of coming plans to revitalize Independence Center.
Rather, the letter says Independence Center could partner with developers specializing in mixed-use projects and innovative ideas that could position the mall as a vibrant community destination.
Those projects could involve new residential, office or entertainment space, according to marketing materials with Matthews Real Estate Investment Services, which last month listed the mall on behalf of owner IGP Business Group of Los Angeles.
