KCPD to begin using new feature to improve 911 service in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City, Missouri Police Department announced Thursday that next week, its 911 system will using a new feature that is expected to improve service in the city.

The a utomated abandoned callback feature will automatically call people who hang up after dialing 911 if the caller disconnects before the call is answered.

KCPD said the system will prompt the person who called to confirm that they meant to dial 911 and need help or confirm the call was an accident or not needed.

The return call will show up as (816) 234-5111, according to police.

KCPD said as of now, a person answering calls has to return the call, which ties up manpower and delays call takers from helping other callers.

Officers first discussed the abandoned callback feature last October at the Board of Police Commissioner’s meeting .

According to KCPD, in 2023, they received 116,628 hang ups that had to be called back. Police have said one of the reasons they get a lot of false 911 calls is 913 being an area code.
